Houston stained glass enthusiasts are usually familiar with the style popularized by the widely respected and iconic architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Also known as “prairie style” this stained glass style usually includes a lot of clear, uncolored glass mixed with earth tones, and small, intricate patterns of squares, rectangles and chevrons. It is a style that works well with many different types of Houston décor, from modern to traditional, from homes to offices.

At Scottish Stained Glass, we’ve designed literally hundreds of stained glass window designs inspired by the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. We also can adapt this style for your particular needs, using textured glass for greater privacy, or more or less color, to your personal tastes.

Please take a look at our FLW design gallery to see the beauty and versatility of these classic designs. This page contains many of FLW’s original designs, as well as the interpretations of his style which Scottish Stained Glass has developed for our clients.

Frank Lloyd Wright himself designed more than 4,000 stained glass panels, which were installed in over 150 of the amazing buildings he designed. He referred to his stained glass creations as “Light Screens,” pointing out one of the most important assets of stained glass windows—they provide privacy and greatly enhance aesthetics and value, all the while still letting the natural light into your rooms.

Named “The Greatest American Architect of all Time” by the American Institute of Architects, FLW was born in 1867 and died in 1959. Both his architectural style and his stained glass style have withstood the test of time, remaining as popular today as they were originally. Indeed, they are classic.

One such example is the The Coonley Playhouse, designed by Wright around 1911. In a departure from his usual stained glass style, the Coonley windows use vibrant primary colors instead of usual earth tones that Wright usually favored. He has just returned from a trip to Europe at that time, and perhaps was influenced by the vivid colored of the stained glass work he saw on his trip.

Not just for windows, Frank Lloyd Wright inspired stained glass is also stunning in doors, transoms, skylights, and hanging panels.

All of our Frank Lloyd Wright inspired stained glass is custom designed and hand crafted by local Texas artisans. Our design process begins with a free consultation with one of our designers. They will come to you, showing you a large variety of designs and glass samples. If you have your own idea in mind, they will sketch it out free hand, on graph paper, so you can get a cost estimate and see how this design will fit in your window.

If you are remodeling or redecorating, or if you are in the process of building a new Houston home, prairie style stained glass can be an exciting addition to your home, greatly enhancing its value and aesthetics.
