The Age-Old Tradition Of Painted Stained For Houston Churches

Painted stained glass is a lovely and unique way to add character and beauty to churches in Houston.  However, creating it is no simple task.  The work is actually very scientific. The colors you see on painted stained glass are made using specific chemical interactions of minerals and oils.  

Painted Stained Glass Technique 1

In this process, the artist starts with glass that is already colored.  They then paint it with special black paint made of oils and minerals.  The piece is then fired in our kiln at 1250-1450 for a few hours until the paint melts into the glass.  Once the two are fused together the paint becomes part of the glass and will never rub off.

The second method uses clear glass.  During this process, the colors are painted on the transparent glass one at a time and fired in between layers to build up color. Yellow is a particularly hard color to achieve.  This is because the chemical used for yellows coloring, silver staining, is very toxic.  It also doesn’t mix well with other colors. So when our artists are trying to achieve the color green, the yellow must be painted on the opposite side of the glass to keep the yellow and blue separate.  Even though this method is very time-consuming, it is the best way to get the true-to-life shading that stained glass aficionados love.
