The Renovation Process

Over the years, we’ve developed a very precise method for restoring stained glass. Our process for remodeling and renovation is as follows:

Extraction: The stained glass is removed from the wall, window, or fixture in which it’s installed. Then, we insert a piece of low-e safety glass in its place. The panel is brought to our studio where we can begin the restoration process.

Cleaning: Over time, dirt, soot, and grime can build up on the glass of your windows, which prevents light from shining through and makes them look dull or unclean. We work to remove this build up by soaking the panel in a bath of gentle cleaners for up to 14 days. This also helps to make disassembling the panel a much easier process.

Disassembly: Before we begin to take apart the panel, we create a duplicate of the original design using photography or rubbings. Then we remove the frames and take the glass apart one piece at a time.

Repair: Glass pieces that are in good condition are set apart and stored in a safe area. Pieces that are badly cracked or damaged, however, require replacement. We exchange the broken glass with matching glass from our inventory.

Reconstruction: The panel is put back together using the blueprint of the original design. Once all of the glass is in place, we add new leading and cement the panel together. Sometimes we also add steel braces for extra reinforcement.

Completion: The panel is returned to its owner and reinstalled in its original placement. A piece of low-e safety glass is added over the top of the window for extra protection with attention to proper ventilation. The restoration is now complete!
